Great websites for exploring different careers

You can only choose a career or job that you know exists. That’s why people often choose to do what their parents did or what they saw on television. In reality there is so much more choice and diversity in the world of work than most of us are exposed to. This resource is all about expanding your understanding of what industries and jobs are out there and giving you an easy way to compare different aspects of those jobs (the skills, salary, qualifications, conditions, etc). The following websites are free, easy to navigate and great for broadening your understanding of what is really possible in your career.

CareerHQ Occupations List

CareerHQ has an amazing Careers Database where you can learn about over 900 different jobs (which are also linked to over 8,000 TAFE and university courses). Each listing includes what the job is, the skills required, a future outlook indicator and links to relevant courses for that job.

Seek Career Guide

Seeks has recently released their Careers Guide. In it they provide you with links into a whole range of different jobs including potential job growth, the skills needed and common salaries. You can explore by industry and I also highly recommend checking out their career advice blog which is full to the brim with great articles.

 Skills Road

Skills Road is run by the Australian Business Chamber. They work extensively with schools around Australia and provide a mixture of career advice and support ranging from career quizzes, through to a cool new 360 degree interactive tool which gives you the chance to look inside a range of workplaces. One word of warning, Skills Road focuses extensively on vocational pathways so you won’t be likely to find any links to university courses or pathways. In saying this, the resources are really easy to digest and provide a welcome relief from the heavy university bias you will see on other websites.

My Big Tomorrow

My Big Tomorrow is a resource designed to help young Australians to learn about different jobs and careers. Don’t be put off by the somewhat childish design. This website is great for discovering a range of different careers with accompanying information and videos.
